Understanding the residual risk associated with Acceptable Solutions

Acceptable Solutions provide a useful way to assess the suitability of development in bushfire prone areas. They are typically considered by bushfire protection designers and assessment authorities as providing an appropriate level of risk management. Their relative ease of use and traditionally accepted benchmarks can however result in the residual bushfire risk being obscure, overlooked or underestimated.

Examples of potentially unacceptable residual risks from well established Acceptable Solutions are provided along with examples of clear over design emanating from Acceptable Solutions. The consequence of misreading or overlooking the residual risk associated with Acceptable Solutions can be significant; with inappropriately vulnerable properties and communities on one hand and unnecessary financial, environmental and social impacts on the other.
